Sleep Study Q & A

What causes poor sleep?

Your sleep can be affected by a number of issues, including your physical health, mental health, and your environment. Your lifestyle also plays a factor in your ability to sleep well every night.

Common causes of poor sleep include:

  • Insomnia
  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Underlying medical conditions

If you’re unsure what’s causing your sleep issues, Dr. Evivie and Dr. Kawaku can help.

How is sleep quality evaluated?

Dr. Kwaku and Dr. Evivie can perform sleep studies and a full physical evaluation of your health. Initially, they review your health history and lifestyle habits to better understand what could be disrupting your sleep.

In cases of snoring or sleep apnea, they will often rely on information from your partner.

Dr. Evivie and Dr. Kwaku also provide take-home sleep study equipment. You use the portable machine for one night, wearing a device on your forehead as you sleep. Attached sensors record information about your sleep quality. The staff uses this information to create a treatment plan.

What treatments are available for sleep disorders?

If underlying medical conditions are affecting your sleep, Dr. Kwaku and Dr. Evivie can start a new treatment plan or make changes to your present treatments to improve your sleep quality.

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that interferes with breathing when your throat muscles relax, Dr. Evivie and Dr. Kwaku might suggest a mouth appliance you wear while sleeping to keep your jaw and tongue in a stable position.

You might also benefit from the use of a device that delivers continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). It provides a steady stream of oxygen to your body while you sleep. This machine can also eliminate snoring to ensure your partner also gets a good night’s sleep.

In addition to specific treatments for medical issues that affect your sleep, Dr. Evivie and Dr. Kwaku will often suggest lifestyle changes, including:

  • Limiting caffeine
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Getting daily exercise
  • Sticking to a bedtime routine
  • Reducing the use of electronic devices like smartphones and tablets before bed

Dr. Evivie and Dr. Kwaku can make other recommendations to ensure you’re getting high-quality sleep every night to reduce your risk for long-term health complications.
